The site on which the extensive house stands on is one of the original riggs of the town which dates back to the establishment of the Royal Burgh. The gardens have walls (also listed) which were part of the early structure of the town. The core of the house is probably of early 17th century origin. The present structure was finalised around 1760 when John Ouchterlony established this town house with its grand balustrade stairway, enclosed reception salon (christened the ballroom).
